Things are looking much better in Oklahoma City.

A California real estate developer says he wants to build the nation’s tallest tower on an L-shaped site in the Sooner state’s capital that currently contains a mediocre parking lot.

In December, Matteson Capital submitted plans for an already impressive 1,750-foot building located in downtown Oklahoma City’s Bricktown neighborhood. On Friday, the company announced in a statement that it would increase the height of its planned skyscraper to 1,907 feet. This is a “symbolic” number, commemorating the year Oklahoma became the state.

The current tallest building in the United States is New York City’s One World Trade Center at a patriotic 1,776 feet tall.

Don’t get too excited. To build something this big in Oklahoma City (currently the tallest building is the 844-foot Devon Tower, home to the region’s oil and gas companies), Matteson would need city approval. there is.

One zoning official told the Oklahoma City Free Press that Matteson would need a complete rezoning, rather than smaller changes, to move forward with the project. The Free Press reports that the rezoning requires the green light from both the local planning commission and city council.

The “skyscraper” that Mattson has dubbed Legend Tower is part of a planned complex called Bricktown’s Boardwalk, which will include three smaller towers around the base of a larger tower. That’s what it means. The planned development will include a total of 1,776 homes, two hotels, shops and restaurants. There will be a restaurant, bar and observation deck atop the tall tower.

Still, any breakthrough, if any, is a long way off. Real estate developers love to sell their lofty projects with flashy renderings. But then many can get bogged down in the red tape of permits to build something far outside the scope of their area, or lack the funds to build on such expensive construction land.
