Henry County’s SPLOST VI program is scheduled to be voted on this November, but first the county must decide which projects will be included in the program. Here are seven new building projects that SPLOST VI can fund.
The SPLOST program is a 1 cent local sales tax. The levy pays for capital projects and road improvements within Henry County.
Possible SPLOST VI architectural projects
Henry County created a SPLOST VI committee this winter to consider possible projects. Since January, the commission has heard presentations from various departments of the county. Here’s a look at some of those potential projects.
New animal control building
Henry County Animal Control has outgrown its current building and needs a new, larger space. The current building was built in 2005 and is 9,100 square feet on a 2.5 acre lot. There is space for 100 dogs and 60 cats and a livestock yard. Over the past 12 months, the department has operated above capacity for eight of his 12 months. Additionally, their calls for service increased by 16% from 2021 to 2023. Animal intake similarly increased by 17% over the same period.
new library
The Henry County Library System last opened a new branch in 2009. Meanwhile, since then, the county has added 55,000 residents. The library asked the county to consider two new libraries in the following locations:
- New library near Ora / District 3
- New Library Near Eagles Landing/District 4
senior megaplex
Henry County Senior Services is considering purchasing land for what they are calling a “senior megaplex.” It is intended to be a one-stop location for senior citizen activities in the county. Examples include bowling alleys, swimming pools, pickleball courts, movie theaters, etc.
Department of Senior Services requests funding to purchase real estate and design facility only In SPLOST VI. They then went on to raise funds for construction through his later SPLOST program.
Replaces Hidden Valley Senior Center
The department is also requesting funding from Senior Services to replace the Hidden Valley Senior Center. The Fairview Senior Center was built in 2001. They are considering building a new senior center.
new recreation center
Henry County is currently building a new recreation center at North Mount Carmel Park. This is located in the Dutchtown community. Parks and Recreation is requesting funding to build a second new recreation center in the Ola area.
new golf course
Although not a new building, another major project being considered is a new golf course. In the fall of 2023, Henry County will close Cotton Fields Golf Course to make way for a new aquatic center and public safety training campus. Since then, local golfers have been asking for a new county-owned option. The SPLOST committee is considering a request to build a new golf course at Nash Farm Park.
indoor pickleball facility
Finally, Parks and Recreation requested the construction of an indoor pickleball facility. At this time, there is not much information about this project, such as its possible location or size.

project cost
The SPLOST VI Committee has not yet considered cost estimates for the above projects. Based on recent construction costs, a new building could cost tens of millions of dollars. The county’s new aquatic center in McDonough will cost more than $50 million to build. The new recreation center at North Mount Carmel Park will cost $16.8 million.
A possible example outside the county is a new animal shelter in Fulton County. It is expected to open in fall 2023 at a cost of $40 million. Gwinnett County also completed a new $10.2 million library, which opened last fall.
Henry County officials said at a recent SPLOST Commission meeting that they will soon share project cost estimates with the commission.
