Femke Boll doesn’t need to remember the last time she failed to cross the line first in a flat 400m race. In the two-lap final at the 2022 World Indoor Championships in Belgrade, she was no match for two-time Olympic champion Shawnae Miller-Uibo from the Bahamas, who won by a sizeable margin of 0.26 points in 50.31 seconds.
Two years later, Bol is a step up in the events on the board. At the national championships in Apeldoorn on February 18, Flying Dutchwoman won in 49.24 seconds, breaking the indoor world record set on the same course 12 months earlier by 0.02 seconds.
The 23-year-old 400m hurdles world champion is on a 14-game winning streak in both indoor and outdoor flat 400m races. She is the only woman to break 50 seconds this year, with a time of 49.69 seconds for Metz and 49.63 seconds for Leavin.
Next fastest on the list for 2024 is Bol’s compatriot and training partner Lieke Claver, who ran a huge lifetime best of 50.10 seconds to finish runner-up in Apeldoorn.
So Boll’s first indoor world title win seems to be the closest thing to an indoor formality.
The two-time European indoor 400m champion doesn’t think the clock will be her main competition at the Glasgow 24 World Indoor Championships.
When asked if she could run faster on the world stage than at home in Apeldoorn, she replied: “It’s going to be difficult there, because you have to run twice in one day (heats and semi-finals on Friday) and then the next day (final race).” It’s a more hectic schedule.
“Additionally, because the field of participants is strong, they are more likely to get in each other’s way. That’s the appeal of indoor athletics, but it also means that the best times aren’t always achievable.”
Even in the great outdoors, going over 400 meters doesn’t always go smoothly.
Bol may have ended last August’s Outdoor World Championships in Budapest with a stunning victory for her country in the women’s 4×400 meters with a sublime flying finish, but she got her start during the competition. Alexis Holmes capitalized on this to snatch victory for the Americans, with the 24-year-old from Hamden, Conn., arriving in Scotland third on the 2024 list. She won her U.S. indoor title on February 17 in Albuquerque with a new championship record of 50.34 points.

However, Claver has been consistent with three of the four fastest times behind Bol (50.10, 50.50, and 50.54).
Having placed sixth and fourth in the past two world indoor finals, she will be competing to repeat the Netherlands’ gold and silver medal double at last year’s European Indoor Championships in Istanbul.
Holland’s chances of achieving the first one-two in any event at the World Indoor Championships are under threat not only by Holmes, but also by Talitha Diggs, who placed second at the U.S. Indoor Championships in 51.23 seconds and holds the lifetime best indoor record. The 21-year-old from New Jersey ran the opening leg for the U.S. women’s 4×400 meter team, which was won by Sidney McLaughlin-Levrone, at the 2022 World Championships in Oregon. The last time the Glasgow Arena hosted a major international athletics competition, Viking Karsten Warholm was running wild the next day.
The Norwegian phenomenon claimed a commanding victory in the 400m at the 2019 European Indoor Championships, shaving 0.51 seconds off his national record and tying Thomas Schönlewe’s 1988 European record with 45.05 points.
Five years later, the three-time Olympic and world 400m hurdles champion is a prominent name on the flat 400m entry list for the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Glasgow24.
Warholm, who will celebrate his 28th birthday two days before the opening session, did not have any indoor form in 2024 and played in the 2024 Diamond League finals in Eugene against inspired Rai Benjamin. He has not competed since suffering a shocking loss in a specialist event. Last September.
Last year, Warholm ran two warm-up races before the European Indoor Championships in Istanbul, where he set a European record pace and finished fast, aiming for victory in a time of 45.35 seconds. He finished just 0.09 seconds behind Belgium’s Julien Watlin, who did the same.

Richards, a product of the University of Alabama Crimson Tide’s athletic setup famous for Steely Dan’s song “Deacon Blues,” won bronze at the World Indoor Relays in Istanbul 12 years ago and, of course, in London in 2017. He won a bronze medal in the world outdoor 200 meters.
At the top of the 2024 indoor time entry list is Brian Faust, who reversed from a 0.58-second deficit at halftime to unleash an unstoppable flow in Albuquerque, surging from third to first in the home straight and leading Jacory. – Led Patterson to the U.S. title.
The 25-year-old graduate of the Purdue University Boilermakers in West Lafayette, Indiana, is undefeated in five indoor 400-meter races in 2024. His outdoor best time is 45.51 seconds.

There have been five American winners of the event, but none since Tyree Washington defeated Britain’s Daniel Keynes in 2003 in Birmingham.
Until 2022, only one Swede had won a medal in this event: Johan Wissmann, who came after Canada’s Tyler Christopher at the 2008 Valencia Games, but in Belgrade, Carl Bengström beat Richards and Trevor of the United States. He won the bronze medal after Bassitt.
The former European U20 400m hurdles champion also won the European indoor bronze medal in Istanbul last year behind Warholm and Watlin. His best this year is 46.38 points, but his indoor PR is 45.33 points.
