Wieland Group is a German manufacturer of copper and copper alloy semi-finished products, including CO tubing.2 (R744) HVAC&R Applications – announced a $500 million (€461 million) investment in a production facility in East Alton, Illinois, USA.
In addition to investing in its East Alton location just north of St. Louis, the company also announced the acquisition of U.S. manufacturers Concast Metal Products and Randall Bearings.
Wieland said in a press release that the investment is “aimed at increasing operational efficiencies” in quality and reliability across the rolled copper solutions portfolio. A portion of the investment will go towards adding hot rolling mills to expand and improve U.S. production of copper and copper alloy components used in electric vehicles, EV charging infrastructure and renewable energy infrastructure.
“Copper is not only essential for the energy transition, but also the foundation for a sustainable future,” said Wieland CEO Erwin Meyer. “This investment demonstrates our dedication to meeting the evolving needs of our customers and bringing long-term sustainable solutions to the North American market.”
The company plans to use its facility in Verlingen, Germany, as a benchmark for the East Alton plant expansion. Wieland manufactures K65 tubing designed for use in commercial CO.2 Fehringen system.
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker toured the Verlingen production facility with Meyer during a trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, in January 2023, Alton reported. telegraph. In addition to investing in Illinois, Wieland expanded its North American footprint through the acquisitions of Concast Metal Products and Randall Bearings.

Concast specializes in manufacturing specialty continuous cast copper alloys such as bars, tubes, profiles, and plates. The company operates manufacturing facilities in Mars, Pennsylvania and Wakeman, Ohio.
Founded in 1965, Randall Bearings manufactures custom machined parts specializing in bronze and other alloys. The company has production facilities in Lima and Coldwater, Ohio.
In 2023, Wieland acquired three additional US companies. In January, it added Heyco Metals and National Bronze to its portfolio. Heyco Metals is a Pennsylvania-based company specializing in light and medium gauge copper, copper alloys, and stainless steel strip fabrication. National Bronze is a Michigan-based manufacturer and distributor of bronze-based bearing products. In August, the company announced the acquisition of Small Tube Products, a Pennsylvania-based manufacturer of copper and copper alloy capillary tubes.
