TYLER, Texas (KETK) — The Smith County Women’s Fund held its annual grant announcement event, with nearly $400,000 awarded to seven local nonprofit organizations.
The organization hopes the funds will enrich the lives of women and children in East Texas.
“What we want to do is give back to the community and create an environment where people feel like they can be part of the community,” said Tomi Ellis, Women’s Fund 2024 board chair.
Camp Tyler received a $37,097 grant from the Women’s Fund.
Camp director Kathy Rajes said donations have decreased since COVID-19.
“It was tough to put people’s agendas on the back burner while we were all struggling. All nonprofits were struggling,” said camp director Kathy Lajes.
The campaign has been fundraising for two years to buy bunk beds and mattresses. This grant will allow us to provide campers with the bedding they will eventually need to spend the night at the campsite.
“Having those in place is very important to us because we will be able to offer summer camps once COVID-19 shuts down,” LaGesse said.
Other nonprofits, such as Family Circle of Care, received $70,000 in grants to expand their services.
“We’re going to open an eye clinic, so we’re going to renovate a building in Tyler and provide care to the whole family, regardless of their ability to pay,” said CEO of Family Circle of Family Circle. (CEO) Kristen Harris said. Care.
These are federally qualified clinics, but the grants awarded do more than meets the eye.
“This shows that our community is behind us and that we are here for them,” said Alisson, Chief Development Officer at Family Circles of Care. Wallace said.
Camp Tyler plans to have cabins and beds available by the time it begins accepting campers in mid-April.
Applications for the 2025 grant are expected to open in late June.
