PEBBLE BEACH — Scottie Scheffler, the No. 1 golfer in the world, showed off his talent Friday with two late birdies to move into a tie for the lead after two rounds of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Scheffler shot a 64 with eight birdies and no bogeys at Pebble Beach Golf Links, going 11 under, including birdies on the 17th and 18th holes, with a 133, his first full appearance on the PGA Tour, ahead of Thomas Detry (Belgium) and Ludwig. – Lined up with Oberg (Sweden). Field’s signature event of the season.

“I felt like I hit a lot of quality shots,” said Scheffler, who set a PGA Tour record last year with more than $21 million in earnings. “I think I probably hit every green, but I don’t know to be honest. Yeah, I felt like I hit a lot of quality shots, and some really good shots that spin and get on the green. I was able to do it and I felt like I gave myself a lot of looks.”

Detrie, who was the first-round leader with a 63 with 10 birdies at Spyglass Hill Golf Course, shot a 70 at Pebble Beach. Oberg, who was trailing Detrie by five shots at the start of the second round, shot a 7-under 65 at Pebble Beach. Scheffler was six shots behind at the start of the second round.

The second round, played under intermittent cloud cover and sunshine, defined the calm before the storm. Weather over the weekend will allow for Saturday’s round, but rain is expected. Heavy rain and strong winds are expected on Sunday.

Emiliano Grillo, who is tied for fifth place with a total of 9 under from 3 points, was expecting a Sunday without golf.

“It’s obviously going to rain again tomorrow and I hope the winds don’t get too strong,” Grillo said. “And on Sunday, I think I’ll be at home drinking coffee and watching TV. Let’s see.

“I don’t know when they’re going to say that, maybe they’re going to try to make us play as many holes as possible tomorrow, we’re going to try to get the tournament over on Monday. I don’t know, to be honest with you. Sunday. It’s not great and I know it’s not going to be much better on Monday, so we’ll see.”

The final two rounds are scheduled in an 80-player, uncut format exclusively at Pebble Beach.
Detrie had four birdies and two bogeys, calling Pebble Beach a much different course than Spyglass Hill on Thursday’s easy tour.

“It’s not easy out there. It’s very wet,” Detrie said. “The greens are obviously a little bumpy because of all the amateurs and all the players playing. The greens are spinny too, so it’s not easy to get close, especially with the back flag. The ball tends to spin back. .

“Overall, I was very happy with the way I was able to control the flight of the ball. Obviously I hit a lot of fairways and I made some really good putts the last two days, so that was good.”

Patrick Cantlay, who led the tournament for most of the first round until Detley surged late in the afternoon, is alone in fourth place after a 69 at Pebble Beach.

Justin Thomas, who started the day at 4 under par, shot a 67 at Pebble Beach and moved into a tie for fourth out of four players at 9 under par. He’s in the same group as Emiliano Grillo (69, Pebble Beach) and Matthew Pavon (70, Spyglass Hill).

“I’m comfortable enough and playing well enough to win,” Thomas said. “Do that and get into the fray more often and try to feel those emotions again.”

Thomas, 30, is in his 10th season on the PGA Tour and last played at Pebble Beach in 2019, when he missed out on a spot at the U.S. Open. He has scored 70 or higher in five rounds of his career in two appearances at Peninsula.

Before last season, Thomas had won at least one PGA Tour title in nine consecutive seasons, including five in 2017, but he stumbled last season. He finished in the top 10 only four times in 21 tournaments and missed the cut six times.

Grillo opened with a 66 at Spyglass Hill and then shot a 69 at Pebble Beach.

“Pebble (Beach) was a little harder than Spyglass, longer and harder, but much softer. It’s a scary combination to play golf on,” Grillo said. “So we’re hitting shots that we’ve never hit before. We’re trying to hit them with a 9-iron from 120 yards. That golf is hard.”

Defending titlist Justin Rose shot a 71 at Pebble Beach and is tied for 23rd out of 11 players at 5 under.

Rory McIlroy, ranked second in the world, continued to struggle. McIlroy shot a 73 at Pebble Beach and is tied for 64th at 2-over.
