World Wetlands Day, celebrated on February 2, raises global awareness about the importance of wetlands for human prosperity and a healthy planet. The 2024 theme “Wetlands and Human Well-Being” focuses on the interrelationship between wetlands and various aspects of human well-being, including physical, mental and environmental health.
Wetlands contain important fresh water and are home to more than 100,000 species. Rice, grown in wetland paddy fields, sustains humanity and is the staple food for 3 billion people, contributing 20% of the world’s food. In addition, wetlands act as natural shock absorbers, buffering the effects of rainfall and reducing the risk of flooding and storm surges.
FAO recognizes the importance of wetlands and promotes integrated resource management of land and water. We are active in supporting conservation, restoration and sustainable management. and address the challenges posed by climate change, biodiversity and competing demands from different sectors.
FAO, in cooperation with the Ramsar Convention Secretariat and the Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security, will celebrate World Wetlands Day on 2 February 2024 from 12:00 to 13:30 (Central European Time) at FAO Headquarters and online. We will hold a meeting.
The main objectives of this celebration are: (i) Raising awareness about wetlands and human well-being; (ii) Highlight the contribution of wetlands to One Health and food security; (iii) sharing agricultural solutions for wetlands and human well-being; (iv) stimulate action and partnership with FAO Member States and other stakeholders;
Interpretation is provided in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish.
