Wout van Aert (Visma Lisa a Bike) won the UCI Cyclocross World Cup in Benidorm, Spain. The Belgian qualified for the final on the final lap and crashed over the barrier on the way to the finish line, but managed to hold off his pursuer and second place Michael Vantourenhout (Powels Sausen Bingaard) to finish the day. won the championship.

“I have a little pain in my wrist,” Van Aert said at the finish line. “I think it was meant to be. Her mother broke her wrist yesterday, they got married on July 13th, and today I saw me.”

Tibau Nis (Baloise Trek Lions) led the chase group and finished third ahead of Eli Iserbit (Pawels Sausen Bingoor), ahead of world champion Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin Deceuninck). ) lost some time but recovered to take 5th place. This was due to a crash on the penultimate lap.

“I felt pretty strong today. Of course Mathieu was strong, but we also had some bad luck, so it’s a shame that we couldn’t win. Still, when Mathieu crashed in the final, I knew I had to beat everyone. “It wasn’t easy. I’m glad I did it,” Van Aert said.

“It’s always a good feeling to win, but especially today my goal was to improve my legs, and I definitely achieved that, so it was a really good day. The plan hasn’t changed, but it was tough.” Today’s race will be an interesting World Championship. ”

how it unfolded

The men’s field lines up in sunny, dry weather for the penultimate round of the UCI Cyclocross World Cup in Benidorm, Spain.

Due to the location and timing of Round 13, world champions Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin Deceuninck), Wout van Aert (Visma Lease-A-Bike) and Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers) Big stars including the team have gathered since training camp in January. It takes place in the Calpe and Denia regions, very close to the coastal towns.

Lawrence Sweek (Clerin-Corendon) led the pack on the dry and dusty circuit, with Joris Nieuwenhaus and Tibau Nis (both Baloise Trek Lions), Ryan Kampf and Eli Yserbyte (both Powell’s) Sausen-Bingor) followed.

The big three of van der Poel, van Aert and Pidcock had a slow start and were stuck further back in a long line of riders trying to move forward on the opening lap.

Van der Poel weaved his way through the field, weaving his way through the riders and into the top 20, but was still a few places behind Van Aert and Piddock, who were further ahead in 12th and 15th place at the start of the second lap. Ta.

At the front of the race, Pim Lonhard (Baloise Trek Lions) put the pedal to the metal on a paved climb and moved into the lead. However, on the paved sections, van Aert and van der Poel were also able to use road strength and power to gain positions.

Van Aert quickly moved to the top of the race before the end of the lap, with van der Poel in fourth place, with both riders setting the fastest lap time of 6 minutes and 39 seconds.

Pidcock also made consistent advances, leading the chasing group from sixth place at the start of the fourth lap, 11 seconds behind the leading group of Van Aert, Niss and van der Poel.

Also in Pidcock’s chasing group were Michael Vantourenhout (Pauwels-Sauzen-Bingor), Iserbyte, Ronard, Nieuwenhuis and Thun Vandebosch (Clerin Corendon).

Van Aert surged up the pavement on the fourth lap, but only van der Poel could match his speed, and Nice fell back. Van der Poel fought back around Van Aert, forcing his rival to expend extra energy to close the gap.

Van Aert and van der Poel had a 10-second lead over Pidcock and Van Tournaut at the start of lap five, but the Ineos Grenadiers rider single-handedly closed the gap in the first half of the circuit and moved into the race lead. Ta. The crowd responded with loud cheers as the race between the “big three” began.

Pidcock gained so much speed that he crossed the barrier and entered the technical corner, opening up a two-second gap over Van Aert, van der Poel and van Tuurenhout before the start of the sixth lap. He then became separated after changing bikes in the pits, but reconnected with the leaders by the end of the lap.

Slightly off the pace at the start of the penultimate lap, Van Aert, Van der Poel, VanTourenhout and Pidcock turned around to see Nice, Yserbyte, Vande Bosch, Filipe Orts, Lars van der Haar and Clement.・I saw Venturini (Arkea). mix.

A premature crash caused van der Poel to collide with a course pole and fall, causing him to lose time and position, but he carefully remounted his bike and rejoined the race, only to fall 22 seconds behind.

At the front, Van Aert attacked on the uphill climb on lap 8, and he was the only one to respond. With one lap remaining, the pair extended their lead to 11 seconds ahead of Nice, Pidcock, Vandebosch, Olts and van der Haal.

Although Van Tourenhout led them into the sandbox, Van Aert jumped ahead of the European champion and clinched the victory on the paved uphill section, continuing to extend his lead on the final section of the circuit.

Van Aert chose to get off his bike before going over the fence. However, while remounting, he tripped over the saddle and fell. Despite the accident, Van Aert quickly got back on his feet and held off Van Tuulenhout to take a solo victory in Benidorm.
