BRAINERD — The Minnesota Water and Soil Resources Commission approved $10 million in Clean Water Fund grants to improve water quality in lakes, rivers, streams and groundwater across the state at its December board meeting.
Crow Wing County received a $30,000 grant to seal wells in the county. This grant is one of 32 BWSR grants allocated this year to fund voluntary conservation projects, including projects focused on improving and protecting drinking water.
“Crow Wing County has an abundance of clean groundwater, and sealing disused or degraded wells helps protect that clean water,” said Chris Pence, Crow Wing County Environmental Services Manager. said in a news release.
Crow Wing County will use this grant for a cost-sharing program to seal abandoned/unused wells. Wells that are sealed in Crow Wing County may be eligible for 50% cost-sharing reimbursement.
The county will provide cost-sharing funding of up to $1,000 per well.
Why is it important to seal wells? Unused or abandoned wells prevent surface water runoff, contaminated water, or improperly disposed waste from reaching uncontaminated groundwater sources. This can be a direct route to water pollution and can lead to groundwater contamination.
Unused large diameter wells can also be a safety hazard to children and animals.
“These grants will enable local governments to partner with landowners across Minnesota to implement projects that protect our precious water and soil resources,” said BWSR Executive Director John. Jaschke said in a release. “This locally-led effort is key to improving water quality in Minnesota.”
