University of North Georgia (UNG) students are gaining real-world investing experience thanks to a $50,000 infusion from the university. UNG Foundation. The Foundation receives and administers all charitable contributions and grants on behalf of and for the benefit of UNG.
Most of the members of the student investment club are Mike Cottrell College of Businessbut the group welcomes students pursuing any degree.
“This type of group can provide students with hands-on experience in stock trading and business analysis.” Dr. Wang Ningsaid the club’s advisor, an associate professor of finance.
Club members use the Bloomberg Terminal software to invest in stocks across various sectors through student-managed investment funds. We also have regular opportunities to hear from guest speakers from the financial industry who provide a broader perspective.
Luke Atwood, a third-year student from Demorest, Georgia, is pursuing a degree. accounting and finance, serves as club president. He is grateful for the funds the foundation has allowed to invest in students learning about financial markets.
“The money gives us a sense of real risk in what we’re doing,” Atwood said. “Detailed analysis is required.”
Junior Jeremiah Njugna is originally from South Central Los Angeles and moved to Snellville, Georgia, where he is currently pursuing a college degree. marketing He is also the club’s chief marketing officer. He said the guest speakers were helpful.
“I am grateful to be able to learn from and build connections with experts,” Njuguna said.
Grace McCarthy, a native of Dawsonville, Georgia, holds a degree in marketing with an emphasis in professional sales and serves as the club’s chief information officer.
“It was very interesting to be responsible for the money we invested and to learn what that meant. There was an inner desire to perform, to do well and to see the numbers grow. There always is,” McCarthy said. “It was a little scary at first, but it’s very exciting to see how we can grow it and make it even better.”
